The Strategic Centres for Science, Technology and Innovation (SHOKs) are a unique cooperation platform for innovative companies and spearheading research.

The decision to set up the Strategic Centres was made by the Science and Technology Policy Council chaired by the Prime Minister in 2006.

The centres are intended to constitute national choices for the best investment targets for limited resources.

The promotion of even closer cooperation between business life and the world of research was set as an objective. At the core of the objective is generating top-level expertise on a global scale and the critical mass required by it for strategically selected fields. The centres focus on producing globally new information and its efficient utilisation. Their activities aim at increasing the global appeal of Finland, which would generate an increase in international cooperation and funding.
